what is the speaker for on the white Iphone 4?

if you look at pictures of the white iPhone 4 on the apple website you can see 2 speakers at the top of the Phone on the front, but the black one only has the one. What is the second one for, and why is it only on the white one?

It’s not a speaker, it’s the proximity and light sensor. It’s on both iPhones it’s just easier to see it on the white version.
